  2. Improvising Black Powder

  5. Black powder can be prepared in a simple, safe manner.
  6. It may be used as blasting or gun powder.
  7.  
  8. Material required:
  9. -----------------
  10.  
  11. potassium nitrate, granulated, 3 cups
  12.  
  13. wood charcoal, powdered, 2 cups
  14.  
  15. sulfur, powdered, 1/2 cup
  16.  
  17. alcohol, 5 pints (whiskey, rubbing alcohol, etc.)
  18.  
  19. Water, 3 cups
  20.  
  21. heat source
  22.  
  23. 2 buckets -- each 2 gallon capacity, at least one of which is heat
  24.              resistant (metal, ceramic, etc.)
  25.  
  26. Flat window screening, at least 1 ft. Square
  27.  
  28. large wooden stick
  29.  
  30. cloth, at least 2 ft. Square

  33. note: the above amounts will yield 2 ounds of black powder.  However,
  34.       only the ratios of the amounts of the ingredients are important.
  35.       Thus, for twice as much black powder, double all quantities
  36.       used.

  38. Procedure:

  41. 1) place alcohol in one of the buckets
  42.  
  43. 2) place potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur in the heat resistant
  44.    bucket.  Add 1 cup water and mix thoroughly with wooden stick until
  45.    all ingredients are dissolved.
  46.  
  47. 3) Add remaining water (2 cups) to mixture.  Place bucket on heat
  48.    source and stir until small bubbles begin to form.
  49.  
  50. Caution:  do not boil mixture.  Be sure all mixture stays wet.  If any
  51.           is dry, as on sides of pan, it may ignite.

  53. 4) Remove bucket from heat and pour mixture into alcohol while
  54.    stirring vigorously
  55.  
  56. 5) let alcohol stand about 5 minutes. Strain mixture through cloth to
  57.    obtain black powder.  Discard liquid. Wrap cloth around black
  58.    powder and squeeze to remove all excess liquid.

  60. 6) Place screening over dry bucket. Place workable amount of damp
  61.    powder on screen and granulate by rubbing solid through screen
  62.  
  63. note: if granulated particles appear to stick together and change
  64.       shape, recombine entire batch of powder and repeat steps 5 & 6.
  65.  
  66. 7) Spread granulated powder on flat dry surface so that layer about
  67.    1/2 inch is formed.  Allow to dry.  Use radiator , or direct
  68.    sunlight.  This should be dried as soon as possible, preferably in
  69.    one hour.  The longer the drying period, the less effective the
  70.    black powder.

  72. Caution: remove from heat as soon as granules are dry.  Black powder
  73.          is now ready for use.
